La Poesía de la Comida:
Project Introduction and Reflection:
An intriguing component of this project was that we were able to choose the recipe we wanted to replicate. As we did minor research on the food we would soon be creating, we learned Spanish content dealing with the 5 senses. Because of this we were able to write an ode that matched a certain component of our recipe.
The recipe I chose, Guatemalan Corn Cake, was simple but apparently delicious! Corn is an incredible source of food for everyone and is used in almost everything. We made a previous format for writing the ode including multiple phrases with each of the 5 senses. Because of that, it was fairly easy to combine them into a "poem-like" structure. At exhibition, multiple locals took copies of my recipe and my ode. I became very proud of my overall project and enjoyed the experience of multicultural cooking.
Recipe:
Guatemalan Corn Cake-

Mix all ingredients on medium speed for 2 minutes. Pour into greased and floured bundt or tube pan. Bake at 350 degrees for about 55 minutes, or until inserted toothpick comes out clean. Cool 15 minutes, then turn out of pan. Dust/sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired.
Numbered Steps:

2. Pour into greased and floured bundt or tube pan.
3. Bake at 350 degrees for about 55 minutes, or until inserted toothpick comes out clean.

Ode:
Ode to the Yellow Corn
the corn
a field of texture where each begins
perfect puzzle pieces
the crunch of each bite indulging
itself into your taste buds
the sweetest of any vegetable
sunshine wrapped in grass
a rainbow of yellow and green
different smells with each
form of cooking
the slippery kernels
when melted in butter
every aroma representing
the popular food
crispness in each nibble
the silky strings inside of
each green husk
POP POP goes the solid kernels as
they burst into an
American favorite
brilliant and delicious
the corn
Oda a al Maíz Amarilla
el maíz
un campo de textura donde cada empieza
trozos de puzle perfectos
el crujido década mordida satisface sí mismo
en tus papilas gustativas
el dulce de cualquiera verdura
la luz del sol envuelto en grama
un arco iris de amarilla y verde
olores diferentes con cada
forma de cocinar
los granos resbaladizos
al derretirse en la mantequilla
cada aroma representa
la comida popular
crujiente en cada mordisquito
las cuerdas sedosas adentro de
cada cáscara verde
PUM PUM va el grano sólido mientras
explotan en una
favorita estadounidense
brillante y delicioso
el maíz

Arte y Lengua:
Descriptión del trabajo:
For this project we had to research an artist from a Spanish speaking country and then create an art piece that has two connections between our work, and the artist's original artwork. But before we got started, as a class we researched many artists such as Juan Miró, Antoni Gaudí, Frida Kahlo, and many more. After much learning of their lives and artwork, we began to write a paper describing some of their work and the piece we created. It had to include the connections and a description of our own art.
The particular part of this project that I struggled with the most would most definitely be the writing portion. I had multiple peer edits along with my teacher's critique. I did my best to edit it by myself but there was no way I could be completely accurate all on my own! I learned a lot of interesting facts about Gaudí besides him just being an artist. One of them was that he was a vegetarian because he became very sick when he was young. And he was also single his whole life! Poor guy. Anyways, I am proud of myself for completing this project because I do not consider myself to be an artist! But I made a photoshop piece that got many compliments at the exhibition and it meant so much to hear that because of how hard I worked. At that point, I knew my effort had paid off!

Mi Cuento Infantil:
For our first Spanish project, we were given the instructions to create a children's book! Initially I was unenthusiastic about it because I knew that somehow art would be involved and that is my weak point... Once we created the sentences about our character in a foreign country, the editing process came. Which I would have to say was quite difficult. However, not the hardest. As I mentioned earlier, art is a struggle of mine. So I knew that creating something colorful and interactive would be a good way to eventually earn the Del Alma children's attention. I spent 10+ hours working just on the decorations, illustrations, and copying all my sentences into my book. Though it took a great amount of time, dedication, and work, it was most definitely worth it!
The title of my book is "¡Adventura De Dex En La República Dominica!"
Pictures of every page in the book to come soon!!!

The exhibition with Del Alma:
You would think that crazy children and crazy teenagers mixed in a classroom would be a bad thing. But really, it was an amazing experience that taught me so much. Each Osprey brought our very own children's book to read to kids and each kid had picked out a book for us to also read them. In the beginning, it was a little awkward and scary to be honest. I was unsure of how the little girl at my table would like my book. But she loved the interactive parts and enjoyed feeling the different textured stickers! It was reassuring to know that all the time put into creating my project was completely worth it!
Hearing my friends read in different voices just to make the kids laugh was my favorite part! Justin Carlson creating "fairy" voices was beyond hilarious and he became known as a professional story teller to the Del Alma group. Being able to experience the mixed cultures with a younger generation was beneficial for all of us at Animas.

My reflection about the project:
As I earlier wrote about, the most surprising part of this whole project would have to be how much I enjoyed the exhibition! It was a unique way to exhibit our work and all of my classmates also loved it. And the most challenging, was putting all the puzzle pieces together; like most vocabulary words, conjugations, and overall content knowledge. My final product, ¡Adventura De Dex En La República Dominica!, is full of refinement. That habit of heart and mind definitely was a key part of my project. Without my teacher and peers helping me through every step leading up to this very DP update, I could not have completed my children's book to the best of my ability! I am very proud of my project and the Spanish content learned through this will stick in my mind for a very long time.
