Guía de Supervivencia:
During this survival guide and skit project I worked with a partner to create a book full of applicable conversations, vocabulary, and random information for a traveler to use when in Colombia. We had to research a particular country and create transportation, food, accommodations, shopping, and a scenario of our own to write about. Our survival guide consists of those scenarios plus an introduction, table of contents, maps, and a bibliography. In order to create our skit, we used our choice scenario which was about theft & robbery. We expanded the dialogue to make it more interesting and active. During our actual performance, we used props and over-exaggerated actions to make it more fun to watch!
From my research, I was able to learn various information about Colombia. I recognized that theft & robbery is present almost everywhere in the world. Through writing my scenario for theft & robbery, I learned good techniques to avoid that from happening to me if I ever travel to foreign countries. It was interesting to read about and see photos of the different kinds of food unique to Colombia. They have many varieties of fruit that I had never heard of and seeing the descriptions of them made me really wanna try them! I also learned that it is important to speak in the formal form because if you don't know someone, it is the most respectful way to go. There were a few different positives to this particular project. For me, one was practicing my Spanish because in Spanish ll, we haven't spent a lot of time working on speaking the language. This project was helpful for me since I gained confidence through acting and speaking a foreign language in front of an audience. Another positive was being able to write in Spanish and practice that skill. The last positive was being able to pick my partner and create two pieces of work that we are both really proud of! |

Journalism:
In our journalism project we were put into groups to write a newspaper for a certain country. Some chose to do a current event, an advertisement, or even a pop culture section. Individually, we wrote these articles and then we collaborated and put together a newspaper. Each of us then chose to contribute by creating a layout, title, weather strip, horoscope, and/or a recipe. When working together, it was key for us to have communication to make sure that each of us could pull our own weight but also help a peer in our group if necessary. And together, each group could create a fantastic newspaper.
I connected to this project through choosing topics that I was interested in. The country my group was given was Colombia. I chose to write about pop culture, create a unique title and to also add a recipe to our newspaper. The thing I liked most about this project was the amount of class time we had to work on our newspaper. Without this time, it would have been impossible to have a well-done collaboration. My best moment during the course of the project was actually when I discovered who I got to work with! When you get to work with others that you trust will do a good job it makes the whole project a lot less stressful.
There were difficulties all throughout the work done for this project. The most challenging part was editing my pop culture article because I was having trouble remembering how some Spanish sentences work. I was able to persevere through this difficult amount of time by turning my draft in on time so I could have great feedback from Janae. I sat down with her and edited my work and made sure I was understanding why changes were necessary. Because of this, my work was much more successful.
Something that I learned about myself during this project was that I should be more confident with my work. For example, I got a very good grade on the pop culture article because I made the revisions necessary even though I was having difficulties. I was also able to make sure my group was on top of the work that needed to get done so I utilized my leadership skills through that. As a collaborator, I feel proud that I contributed pieces to the newspaper that I know I worked hard on. Each of these areas are places that I have learned about myself.
Now that I have spent a month focusing on current events in Spanish speaking countries, I have gained knowledge that is valuable to my language learning experience. For example, I have been able to notice similarities between Spanish speaking countries and the United States. A difference of language does not have to put a barrier between countries. Through writing about Colombia, I have become aware that we share similar activities, interests, and even certain styles of food. I feel this is valuable to my language learning experience because it makes me want to travel more so that I can practice my Spanish speaking skills!

Día de los Muertos:
Descriptión del trabajo:
For this project we learned about Day of the Dead and brought that culture into our classroom. Each of us had to chose a loved one that passed away to write about and represent through a visual piece. We wrote two paragraphs summarizing the lives of our special person as well as certain experiences that we remember with them. Our art pieces had to show typical Mexican art styles while also incorporating that person's interest in general. Prior to exhibition we set my up an altar in our classroom and brought some of our loved one's favorite foods to share with the class. We also brought an object or photo to place on the altar to honor them.
Reflexión:
I learned a great amount about the Day of the Dead in the Mexican culture. One thing I was unaware of was how important the tradition is to their community and country. It was interesting to me to learn that the origin of the tradition is Aztecs combined with Catholic beliefs. When we brought different items to the altar it was really interesting to hear who everyone wrote about and commemorated. I enjoyed the experience because it was emotional but also a celebration. We celebrated each life of the dead by setting up the altar, eating, and discussing memories with our classmates. I am most proud of my writing with this project because I went into detail and really took my time to create a solid piece of writing. I made multiple revisions to my work in order for it to be done to the best of my ability. I do not think there is anything I would have done differently with my overall project because I put my best effort into all of it. The most difficult part of the project for me was incorporating the Mexican Day of the Dead culture because I chose not to use skulls/skeletons. I did not feel that it honored my grandpa in an efficient way so I had to really think outside of the box. However, I think that my work was still very well done and I am please with the outcome of this project.
Escritura:
